ROUNDUP TOXIC CHEMICAL LAWSUIT

Roundup is a common household weed killer. In fact, it’s the most commonly used weed killer in the world. Its purpose is to kill unwanted plants from yards, farmland, parks and other properties. After the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) released a report in 2015 citing Roundup’s active ingredient, glyphosate, as a “probable human carcinogen”, its manufacturer, Monsanto, has been faced with thousands of lawsuits. The agency referred to evidence of non-Hodgkin lymphoma from human exposure to glyphosate, mainly from agricultural use in the United States, Canada and Sweden beginning in 2001. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), approximately 100 million pounds are used on US farms and lawns annually. Monsanto, which was acquired by Bayer Ag in June of 2018, is facing more than 13,000 consumer lawsuits, with new cases being filed nearly daily.

• In 2016, dozens of lawsuits filed against Monsanto were consolidated into multidistrict litigation (MDL). These cases were filed by landscapers and farmers claiming that exposure to glyphosate contributed to the development of non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
• In 2018, a San Francisco Superior Court awarded $78 million to former groundskeeper DeWayne Johnson, who claimed he developed non-Hodgkin lymphoma from spraying Roundup daily over the course of 4 years.
• In 2019, Santa Rosa resident, Edwin Hardeman, was awarded $80 million, and a California jury awarded $2.055 billion to a couple whom alleged Roundup weed killer caused their cancers. According to a S. Right to Know report, the jury found that Monsanto, “…engaged in conduct with malice, oppression or fraud committed by one or more officers, directors or managing agents of Monsanto.”

Non-Hodgkin lymphoma is a form of cancer that starts in white blood cells, called lymphocytes, which are part of the body’s immune system. Untreated, it can spread to other parts of the lymph system and ultimately to the liver, brain and bone marrow.

As more lawsuits continue to be filed across the world, many communities have banned glyphosate from use in public areas. Several countries have also limited the use of Roundup due to growing health concerns.
